Our courses and certifications, internationally recognized, are designed to meet learners’ needs. In 2022, DSF strengthened its regional presence by opening an office in Rwanda to be at the heart of local projects, needs, and opportunities. We also have a team based in South Africa, actively contributing to our projects and to our growth across the African continent. Our operational teams, present on the ground and fully integrated into local ecosystems, work closely with strategic stakeholders to maximize our impact. South Africa: Empowering Teachers and Youth

Learn more

In South Africa, our collaboration with a dedicated implementation partner, 2enable, and support from GIZ has reshaped the career prospects of 171 teachers through the online DSF platform. However, the ripple effect extends far beyond these teachers — the program directly impacted the futures of 385 young, unemployed individuals, offering them a new pathway to personal and professional growth. This initiative exemplifies how targeted partnerships can drive broad social change, uplifting both educators and learners.

Namibia:
Driving Digital Transformation in Schools

Learn more

Our partnership with the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture in Namibia has been instrumental in strengthening digital education. Together, we trained 30 Master Trainers and 2,582 teachers on digital literacy and 21st-century teaching skills. To complement this, a student digital literacy program enabled 1,500 students to acquire vital digital skills, ensuring that the program’s benefits reach every corner of the learning ecosystem. Our relationship with the Ministry continues and the Master Trainers have become our sounding board and focus group to test new courses before we release them.

Rwanda: Scaling Impact and Establishing Roots

Inspired by the successes DSF has had and is having in Rwanda, we established a permanent DSF office in Kigali, allowing us to deepen and diversify our initiatives. Subsequent collaborations further demonstrate the potential for cost-effective scaling of digital skills when working alongside visionary, like-minded partners. Below are summaries of past and present projects in which DSF is involved.

Digital Upskilling for Rwanda’s TVET Educators

Learn more

As part of the larger GIZ lead Eco-Emploi program that ran from 2020 to 2022 in Rwanda to curb high unemployment rates, DSF were tasked with providing digital and 21st century skills training to 2,500 TVET teachers across 30 districts in Rwanda.

In partnership with GIZ and RTB, the capacity-building programme was aimed at educators in the TVET sector who have received a laptop but lack the digital literacy to take advantage of it entirely. 30 Master trainers and 2500 teachers were involved in the program. The training of Master Trainers enhanced Rwanda’s local capacity-building potential as they are now available to provide the support required for expanding the initiative in the country.

Licences to participate in the program were given to 2500 TVET teachers. They had full access to the platform, allowing them to go through the courses asynchronously. Allowing them to design their learning journey according to their primary needs and interests. Having received a one-day induction from a Master Trainer, licence holders could then access the platform on their devices at work and at home. The program ran from January to September 2022. During the 8 months 2,250 TVET teachers participated in the learning and more than 1,300 of them achieved international certification. More than 45,000 hours of learning was delivered.

Unlocking Opportunities for Rwanda’s Youth Through Digital Skills

Learn more

Rwanda has become a shining example of what is possible when strong partnerships are at the core of educational transformation. Upon the recommendation of the two leading Ministries (MINICT and MINEDUC), Digital Skills Factory (DSF) was contracted by Big Win Philanthropy as a Technical Partner to support the Government of Rwanda in implementing a digital skills training program. Recognising that a significant proportion of Africa’s future workforce will be sourced from secondary schools due to limited access to post-secondary education. The program focused on building the capacity of secondary school teachers and students to bring about sustainable changes in the education system. The program is ongoing and aims to enable half a million young people to unlock economic opportunities through digital skills development over five years. Since the program launched in January 2023 more than 15,000 teachers and 130,000 secondary school students have been enrolled onto DSF’s platform accessing courses in digital literacy and 21st century skills. This has been possible through a network of more than 600 schools across all 30 districts in Rwanda.

The long-term objective of this project is to create an online digital skills training program owned and managed by the Government of Rwanda, along with a sustainable framework for integrating digital skills within the education system.
