IMPACT STORY

From Unemployment to Empowerment : Digital Skills Change Lives in South Africa

SOUTH AFRICA’S CONTEXT

THE PROJECT

In South Africa, where unemployment continues to affect both qualified professionals and young people, digital skills have become a vital bridge to opportunity. Through a targeted online digital literacy program, we partnered with a local organisation that secured funding support to upskill 171 unemployed teachers and 385 young people, equipping them with essential competencies for today’s digital world.

This initiative not only opened doors to further learning and employment but also reignited confidence, purpose, and participation in the digital economy—demonstrating the powerful ripple effect of inclusive, community-driven learning.

Many qualified but unemployed teachers lacked access to digital tools, limiting their ability to engage in the modern job market or contribute to education delivery.

In partnership with local experts, we upskilled five Master Trainers who spoke the local languages, ensuring culturally relevant and accessible support. To enable scalable and sustainable learning, participants were brought together in shared venues where they had access to both reliable connectivity and digital devices. These supportive learning environments fostered motivation and accountability, helping participants complete their courses. Progress was closely monitored using DSF’s data-driven dashboard, ensuring that no one was left behind.

OUTCOMES

Turning Challenges into Opportunities : Bringing Digital Learning Closer to Communities

What began as online training for five Master Trainers quickly became a story of adaptation and local ingenuity. Faced with connectivity challenges, the team didn’t pause – they shifted.

Training moved offline, into spaces carefully chosen to fit each province’s context. For NEET youth, sessions were relocated to central hubs, ensuring no one was left behind.

But the real game-changer? A Master Trainer who spoke the local language. That single element transformed the experience, building trust, boosting participation, and making learning feel more personal.

This wasn’t just about digital skills. It was about meeting people where they are – and proving that with the right approach, even the toughest challenges can lead to deeper impact.
